Used Injection Moulding Machine Financing in Canada
Used injection moulding machines can be financeable, but lenders need to understand the exact press, condition, controls, seller and any auxiliary equipment included in the transaction.
Injection moulding transactions are often packages, not single machines
A used press may be sold with a robot, material dryer, temperature controller, chiller, granulator, conveyor or moulds.
The financing file should identify what is actually included rather than calling the entire package one machine.
Machine specification affects value
Useful details include clamp tonnage, shot capacity, control system, screw and barrel condition, platen configuration and tie-bar spacing where relevant to the buyer’s process.
The lender does not need to become a plastics engineer, but the asset should be described well enough to understand what market it belongs to.
Controls and support matter
Older machines can remain productive, but unsupported controls or hard-to-source components can affect resale and operating risk.
If major controls or hydraulic components have been rebuilt, document the work.
Seller type changes the documentation
A plastics machinery dealer may provide a formal quote and condition representation. A plant liquidation or private sale may provide less information.
That can increase the importance of inspection and value support.
Moulds should be identified separately
Moulds can be valuable production assets, but they are highly specific to the part being produced.
If moulds are included, itemize them and explain whether they belong to the buyer, seller or end customer.
Auxiliary equipment can affect the total project
A used press may be inexpensive compared with the full cell required to run it.
Budget for material handling, cooling, drying, automation, guarding, electrical work and installation.
What should the buyer collect?
- Machine listing or quote
- Make, model and year
- Serial number
- Clamp tonnage and key specifications
- Photos and video if available
- Maintenance or rebuild information
- Included auxiliaries
- Seller information
- Rigging and freight estimate
Frequently asked questions
Can moulds be financed with the press?
Potentially. The lender may treat moulds differently because they can be highly specialized.
Can auxiliary equipment be included?
Potentially, especially when it is durable equipment required for the cell.
Can a plant liquidation machine be financed?
Potentially. Timing, seller documentation, condition and title all matter.
Can an older press be financed?
Potentially. There is no universal age cutoff across all lenders.
Finance the cell you actually need
Do not present a press-only budget if the machine cannot run without additional equipment.
If you have a used moulding machine under consideration, send Raymond Leigh the listing and package details.
Electric versus hydraulic presses can create different diligence questions
The financing decision is not based on one technology being better. The lender wants to know the machine is commercially useful, supportable and appropriately valued.
For older hydraulic presses, condition and service history may be important. For highly electronic machines, control support and replacement components can matter.
Robot and automation ownership should be clear
A press may be advertised with a robot that is leased, customer-owned or supplied under a separate agreement. Confirm that every asset included in the purchase price can actually be transferred.
Mould ownership deserves special attention
Moulds may belong to an end customer even though they are physically stored at the seller’s plant. Do not assume physical possession means the seller can include them in the sale.
Customer-owned tooling should be excluded from the financed asset list unless ownership is clearly transferable.
Cooling and auxiliary capacity should be checked before purchase
A larger used press may require more electrical power, chilled water or material-handling capacity than the buyer’s current plant can provide.
Those upgrade costs can change the total project economics even when the machine price looks attractive.
How to present a full moulding cell to the lender
Use a simple asset schedule. List the press, robot, dryer, temperature controller, granulator, chiller and any owned moulds separately with their purchase values where practical.
This helps the lender see what portion of the project is durable equipment and what portion is installation or service.
Production validation belongs in the buyer’s diligence
If possible, see the machine running the intended resin and mould type or obtain a technical inspection. A finance approval confirms credit, not shot quality, cycle time or process capability.
